Provision of the Art and Design curriculum at St Gregory’s aims to engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they develop an understanding of how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

Throughout Key Stages 1 and 2, pupils:

· safely use and explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques and experiment with colour, texture, design, form and function (EYFS)

· explore a range of techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space

· improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials

· learn about the work of great artists, architects and designers in history

In Reception, pupils learn to use colour, pattern and space to express their ideas in art. Throughout Years One and Two, pupils continue to use pencil, paint, pastels and natural textiles to explore techniques and create portraits, natural scenes and habitats. In Year Three, pupils explore construction and sculpture and develop their skills in sketching and using colour and tone. Pupils in Year Four develop their drawing skills and explore texture, form and perspective. In Year Five, pupils create paintings of Egyptian Gods, make clay canopic jars and draw their own cartouche using hieroglyphs. They study the artwork of Turner as they explore the local area and create skylines and sketches, paintings and collages of the rivers in London. Pupils in Year Six explore art during WWII, construct Christ the Redeemer statues and make replica tools from the Stone Age.
