National Assessments

Reception Baseline Assessment

During the first few weeks of Reception, all children complete the Reception Baseline Assessment (RBA).

This is a short, age-appropriate assessment completed individually with a teacher.  It is a simple, fun activity designed to help us find out what your child already knows and can do when they start school.

It helps us understand your child’s starting point in areas such as early mathematics, literacy and communication. There is no need for children to prepare for the assessment.

The RBA provides a starting point for measuring children’s progress throughout primary school and is just one part of how we assess and support your child.

Reception Baseline Assessment Information for Parents

Phonics Screening Check

In Year 1, children complete the Phonics Screening Check. This is a short, simple check to see how well children can use their phonics skills to read words.

The check takes place in June and is completed individually with a teacher in a quiet and supportive environment.

Teachers will support children throughout the year and provide guidance on how you can help your child practise phonics at home.

Multiplication Tables Check

In Year 4, children complete a short Multiplication Tables Check (MTC). It helps us see how confidently children can recall their multiplication tables.

The check is completed on a computer and children are given 6 seconds for each question.

Your child’s teacher will provide guidance on how you can support your child in preparing for the check. The results help teachers identify areas where your child may benefit from further practice and support.

Key Stage 2 SATs

In Year 6, children take their Key Stage 2 SATs.

These national tests take place from Monday 10 May to Thursday 13 May 2027.

The tests cover English grammar, punctuation and spelling, reading and mathematics. They help to show how children are progressing at the end of primary school.

Teachers will support children throughout the year and provide guidance on how you can support your child at home.
